Step Back in Time with Talking Animals!
Right now, the Jersey Library in St Helier is hosting a truly magical exhibition! 🏛️ It’s all about the famous Fables of Aesop, and it features incredible, centuries-old books filled with amazing drawings. If you love stories about clever creatures and epic adventures, you won’t want to miss this.
Why Are Fables So Cool?
Have you ever heard the story of the city mouse visiting his country cousin? 🐭 Or the competition between the Wind and the Sun to see who is stronger? These are Aesop’s fables! They are short, exciting stories that use talking animals to teach us big lessons about life, fairness, and being kind.
Sometimes, they warn us to be careful, like the story of the cunning fox who flatters a rooster just to get a tasty meal! 🐓 This exhibition lets you see exactly how people read these epic tales hundreds of years ago.
Surviving the Great Fire
One of the most amazing items on display is a huge book created by a man named John Ogilby all the way back in 1668. 🔥 Just two years before it was published, the famous Great Fire of London burned down his entire printing business!
He didn’t give up, though. He borrowed money, rebuilt his printing press, and printed this massive book featuring nearly 145 stunning illustrations.

You can see some wild stories in these pictures. 🦅 For example, one drawing shows a tiny wren beating a mighty eagle in a flying contest just by hiding in the eagle’s feathers! The beautiful, hand-carved drawings show these dramatic moments perfectly.

- Animals act like people: Fables use creatures to show off human traits like greed, cleverness, or kindness.
- Super old stories: Aesop is believed to have lived in ancient Greece over 2,500 years ago!
- A fiery history: The 1668 book on display was made just after the Great Fire of London nearly ruined its creator.
- Incredible art: The books feature detailed “engravings,” which were pictures carved by artists to print onto the pages.
A sneaky frog once tied a mouse to its leg for a swim, but it ended in disaster when a hungry hawk swooped down and carried them both away! 🦅
