Light is a form of energy that allows us to see the world around us. It travels in straight lines at an astonishing speed โ€” 300,000 kilometres per second! Because light travels in straight lines, it cannot bend around objects. When light hits an opaque object (one that doesn’t let light through), the light is blocked and a dark area forms on the other side โ€” this is called a shadow. The shape of a shadow matches the outline of the object that blocked the light. Shadows change in size depending on where the light source is. When a light source is close to an object, the shadow is large. When the light source is further away, the shadow becomes smaller. This is why our shadows are long in the morning and evening (when the sun is low) and short at midday (when the sun is high above us).
