Discover how the Romans changed Britain during their 400-year rule.
The Romans were one of the most powerful civilisations the world has ever seen. They invaded Britain in 43 CE under Emperor Claudius, and despite resistance from tribes like the Iceni (led by Queen Boudicca), they went on to rule most of Britain for nearly 400 years. The Romans transformed Britain enormously. They built long, straight roads โ over 16,000 km of them โ to move their armies and supplies quickly. They founded cities such as Londinium (London), Eboracum (York) and Aquae Sulis (Bath). They introduced the Roman calendar, central heating systems (called hypocausts), public baths, and new crops. To defend their territory, Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of a massive wall across northern England in 122 CE. Hadrian’s Wall stretched 73 miles and can still be visited today!
