The Vikings were seafaring people from Scandinavia who became famous for raiding monasteries and settlements across Europe from around 793 CE. Their first recorded raid in Britain was on the monastery of Lindisfarne in Northumbria. But the Vikings were much more than raiders — they were skilled traders, explorers and settlers. Viking longships were extraordinary vessels, capable of navigating open oceans as well as shallow rivers, which let them reach Iceland, Greenland and even North America centuries before Columbus. Vikings settled across large parts of Britain, especially in the north and east (an area known as the Danelaw). They left a lasting legacy in the English language — over 1,000 everyday words (including ‘egg’, ‘sky’, and ‘window’) and hundreds of place names ending in ‘-by’, ‘-thorpe’ or ‘-thwaite’ come from Old Norse.
