Explore the incredible world of ancient Egypt, its pharaohs and pyramids.
Ancient Egypt is one of the most fascinating civilisations in human history. It grew along the banks of the River Nile in north-east Africa and lasted for more than 3,000 years, from around 3100 BCE. The Nile was essential โ its yearly floods left behind rich, fertile soil perfect for growing crops like wheat and barley. Ancient Egyptian society was ruled by powerful kings and queens called pharaohs, who were believed to be gods on Earth. When pharaohs died, they were buried in enormous stone tombs called pyramids, filled with treasures and supplies for the afterlife. The Egyptians also invented one of the world’s earliest writing systems โ hieroglyphics โ which used pictures and symbols instead of an alphabet. They made huge advances in medicine, maths, architecture and art.
