Learn what division means, its key vocabulary, and how to solve division problems.
Division is one of the four main operations in mathematics. It means splitting a number into equal groups or finding how many times one number fits into another. Division is the inverse of multiplication โ knowing 4 ร 6 = 24 means you automatically know 24 รท 6 = 4 and 24 รท 4 = 6. The number being divided is called the dividend, the number you divide by is the divisor, and the result is the quotient. When a number can’t be divided into perfectly equal groups, there’s a remainder โ for example, 17 รท 5 = 3 remainder 2. There are several strategies for dividing: using times table knowledge, grouping objects, using number lines, or short division (the ‘bus stop’ method) for larger numbers. Division appears constantly in real life โ sharing food equally, splitting costs, or working out how many weeks are in a number of days.
