โญ Key Facts

1 Pitch describes how high or low a musical note is โ€” higher-pitched sounds have faster vibrations.
2 Dynamics describe how loud or quiet music is โ€” from pianissimo (very quiet) to fortissimo (very loud).
3 In written music, Italian words are used to indicate dynamics: piano (p) means quiet, forte (f) means loud.

Explore how pitch and dynamics shape the feel and expression of music.

Two of the most expressive elements in music are pitch and dynamics. Pitch refers to how high or low a note sounds. Higher pitches are created by faster vibrations โ€” a tightly stretched string or a short tube produces a higher pitch than a loose string or a long tube. Notes are named using the musical alphabet (A B C D E F G) and arranged on a stave (the set of five lines used to write music). Dynamics tell performers how loud or quiet to play. Musical dynamics use Italian terms: pianissimo (pp) means very quiet, piano (p) means quiet, mezzo piano (mp) means moderately quiet, mezzo forte (mf) means moderately loud, forte (f) means loud, and fortissimo (ff) means very loud. Skilled composers and performers use changes in both pitch and dynamics โ€” called a crescendo when getting louder and a decrescendo or diminuendo when getting quieter โ€” to create drama, emotion and variety in music.
