Learn sketching and shading techniques to make your drawings look 3-dimensional.
Drawing is one of the fundamental skills in art, and learning to sketch and shade well transforms a flat outline into something that looks real and three-dimensional. Sketching usually begins lightly โ using construction lines and basic shapes to plan the composition before adding detail. Shading is the process of adding dark and light tones to suggest form, depth and the direction of light. There are several shading techniques: hatching uses parallel lines drawn close together (closer lines = darker tone); cross-hatching adds another set of lines crossing the first; stippling builds tone using tiny dots; and blending smooths pencil marks with a finger or blending stick to create smooth gradations. The key to convincing shading is observing where your light source is coming from โ surfaces facing the light are palest; surfaces turned away from the light are darkest; and in between there are gradual mid-tones.
