For most children, learning to talk is a natural part of growing up. However, for a young girl named Dani Reyes, finding her voice was a determined journey that required special help and lots of hard work. Dani lives in Ohio, USA, with her family, who noticed that something was changing when she was just fifteen months old.

Early Challenges

Dani’s mother, Jackie, observed that her daughter frequently stopped using the words she had already learned. Dani became non-verbal (someone who does not use spoken words to communicate) and would often stare into the distance instead of looking at people. Eventually, doctors gave Dani a diagnosis (when a professional identifies a medical condition) of autism. This meant her brain worked in a different way, making communication and socialising more difficult for her.

The Power of Therapy

To help Dani develop her skills, she joined a community of experts at Cleveland Clinic Children’s hospital. She began a programme called Applied Behavioural Analysis, or ABA (a therapy that uses rewards and practice to help people learn new behaviours). Her therapist, Chiara Graver, explained that they used ‘prompts’ to help Dani manage her feelings and learn how to talk to others again.

A Social Butterfly

The progress Dani has made is truly remarkable. Now four years old, she has transformed from a quiet child into a “social butterfly” who loves art and drawing. She is even learning her letters and numbers! For her parents, the best part is finally being able to have a chat with their daughter every day. Jackie says that while some parents might find constant talking tiring, she finds it wonderful because she knows how much effort it took for Dani to find her identity and her voice again.
