Greece Says: “Time to Log Off” (If You’re Under 15!)

Have you ever noticed that once you start watching videos on your phone, itโ€™s really hard to stop? The Greek government has been watching this too, and theyโ€™ve decided to make a big change to help kids stay healthy and happy.

Greece is planning a new law that says you must be at least 15 years old to have your own social media accounts. Here is the “scoop” on why they are doing it and how it works!

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ The Important Dates

  • Summer 2026: The leaders of Greece will vote to make this a official law.
  • January 1, 2027: The rules will officially start. This gives families and phone companies time to get ready!

๐Ÿง  Why the Age 15?

The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, says that science shows young brains need a break from the screen. Here are the three main things he wants to fix:

  1. Addictive Apps: Some apps are designed like games to keep you scrolling forever. Greece wants kids to spend that time playing outside or being with friends instead.
  2. Stop the Comparison: Sometimes looking at “perfect” photos of other people can make us feel sad about our own lives.
  3. Better Sleep: Itโ€™s hard to sleep when your phone is buzzing! This law aims to help kids get the rest they need to grow.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Which Apps Are Banned?

The ban is mostly for apps that use “endless scrolling” (where the videos never end!).

  • Banned for under 15s: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat.
  • Still okay to use: WhatsApp, Viber, and YouTube. These are seen as “helper apps” because they help you talk to your family or learn things for school.

๐Ÿ”‘ The “Kids Wallet” (The Digital Key)

You might wonder: “How will the app know how old I am?” Greece is building a cool high-tech tool called a Kids Wallet.

  • How it works: Parents link their child’s phone to a special government app.
  • The Token: The app creates a “digital token” (like a secret code). When you try to log into an app, the token tells the app “Yes, this person is 15” without ever telling the app your name or your private information.
  • The Penalty: If a social media company lets a younger kid join anyway, they could have to pay millions of dollars in fines!

๐ŸŒ Is This Happening Everywhere?

Greece isn’t alone! Many countries are starting to think that kids are on social media too much:

Country Minimum Age Goal
Australia 16 Years Old
France 15 Years Old
Spain 16 Years Old
Greece 15 Years Old

The Greek Prime Minister even wrote a letter to all the leaders in Europe asking them to make this a rule for every country there!

๐Ÿ’ก What Do You Think?

While it might seem annoying to wait until you’re 15, the goal is to make sure technology is a tool that helps you, not a trap that keeps you from enjoying the real world.

What would you do with your extra time if you weren’t scrolling? โšฝ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ“š
