School Dinners Get a Healthy Makeover!

Big changes are coming to school canteens across England! The government has announced a new plan to “overhaul” (completely change and improve) school dinners. The goal is to make sure that the food you eat at lunchtime is as healthy and nutritious (good for your body) as possible.

Under these new rules, deep-fried food will be banned, and “sugar-laden” treats will be restricted. Instead of having sugary puddings every day, fruit will become the main choice. This is the first time school food rules have been updated in ten years!

Why are the Rules Changing?

The government wants to help children stay healthy and strong. Currently, many children eat too much sugar, which can lead to tooth decay (when sugar causes holes in your teeth). In fact, tooth decay is the top reason why children aged five to nine have to visit the hospital. By adding more vegetables, fruit, and wholegrains (like brown bread and pasta) to the menu, experts hope everyone will have more energy for their lessons.

While many people think this is a great idea, some school leaders are worried about the cost. They say that healthy food can sometimes be more expensive to buy and cook. The government has promised to look into this and is also opening 500 new breakfast clubs to make sure pupils start the day with a full tummy.

Key Facts About the New Plans

  • September 2027: This is when the new rules will officially start in all schools.
  • Sweet Treats: Sugary desserts will only be allowed on the menu once a week.
  • Goodbye Fried Food: Foods that are deep-fried in oil will no longer be allowed.
  • More Free Meals: From 2026, about 500,000 more children will be able to get free school meals.
  • Checking In: There will be a “robust” (strong) system to check that schools are following the new rules.

What is Changing on the Menu?

Food Type Old Rules New Rules
Desserts Often served every day. Limited to just once a week.
Fried Food Allowed on certain days. Completely banned.
“Grab and Go” Items Sausage rolls and pizza available daily. Replaced with healthier options like fruit.

These changes will happen slowly to give kitchen staff enough time to learn new recipes and find the best ingredients. So, next time you head to the dining hall, you might see some exciting new colourful vegetables or tasty wholegrain treats on your tray!
