The Great Big Crunch: Making “Noise” for Healthy Food!

Did you know that taking a loud bite out of an apple can actually help make a difference? Over the past few weeks, culminating this weekend on May 1st, a record-breaking 240,000 students, teachers, and families across Canada took part in a massive event called the “Great Big Crunch.”

What is it? Instead of a moment of silence, the Great Big Crunch is a moment of anti-silence! Everyone grabs a crunchy fruit or vegetableโ€”like an apple, a carrot, or a celery stickโ€”and takes a giant, noisy bite at the exact same time.

Why do they do it? The goal is to make as much noise as possible to celebrate healthy school lunches! The giant crunching sound is a fun way to remind leaders how important it is that every single child gets access to nutritious, yummy meals at school to help their brains and bodies grow strong.

The Best Part? This year’s event was the biggest and loudest one ever! All that synchronized crunching helped celebrate a historic moment, as the government recently agreed to make healthy school food programs permanent. It is a brilliant example of how kids can use their voices (and their teeth!) to make a huge difference in the world.
