Understanding colour is one of the most important skills for any artist. Colours can be divided into groups based on how they are made. Primary colours — red, yellow and blue — are the building blocks of all other colours. You cannot make them by mixing. When you mix two primary colours together, you get a secondary colour: red and yellow make orange, blue and yellow make green, and red and blue make purple. The colour wheel shows all these colours arranged in a circle, and it helps artists understand how colours relate to each other. Colours that sit opposite each other on the wheel are called complementary colours — like blue and orange, or red and green. When placed side by side, complementary colours create exciting, vibrant contrast. Artists use warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) to create energy and cool colours (blues, greens, purples) to create calm.
