โญ Key Facts

1 Our bodies need a balanced diet including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water.
2 Fruit and vegetables should make up the largest portion of our diet โ€” we should aim for at least 5 portions a day.
3 Eating too much sugar and saturated fat can lead to health problems like tooth decay and heart disease over time.

Find out why eating a balanced, varied diet is so important for your health.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind. Our bodies need several different types of nutrients to work properly. Carbohydrates (found in bread, rice, pasta and potatoes) give us energy. Proteins (in meat, fish, eggs and beans) help our bodies grow and repair themselves. Fats (in dairy, nuts and oils) are important for brain function and keeping us warm. Vitamins and minerals (plentiful in fruit and vegetables) keep our immune system strong and our organs healthy. Dietary fibre (in wholegrain foods and vegetables) helps our digestive system work well, and water keeps every cell in our body hydrated. A good rule of thumb is to fill half your plate with fruit and vegetables, and aim for variety โ€” because different coloured foods contain different valuable nutrients.
