Hinduism is one of the oldest and most complex religions in the world, with origins on the Indian subcontinent stretching back more than 4,000 years. Today, around one billion people practise Hinduism, mainly in India and Nepal, but with communities all over the world. Hindus believe in one supreme being called Brahman โ€” the eternal, universal spirit or force. However, Brahman can be understood and worshipped in many forms, through various gods and goddesses such as Vishnu (the preserver), Shiva (the destroyer) and Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth and fortune). Key beliefs include dharma (living a righteous, dutiful life), karma (the idea that actions have consequences) and reincarnation (the soul being reborn after death). Hindus worship both at home and in temples called mandirs. Diwali โ€” the colourful, joyful Festival of Lights โ€” is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals.
