Learn about the beliefs, practices and Five Pillars of the Islamic faith.
Islam is one of the world’s major religions, with around 1.8 billion followers worldwide โ making it the second largest religion after Christianity. People who follow Islam are called Muslims. The word ‘Islam’ means ‘submission’ or ‘peace’ in Arabic. Muslims believe in one God, called Allah (the Arabic word for God), and that the Prophet Muhammad was His final and greatest messenger. They believe the Qur’an โ their holy book โ is the direct word of God revealed to Muhammad. The Five Pillars of Islam are the five core practices that shape a Muslim’s life: Shahada (declaring faith), Salah (praying five times a day facing Mecca), Zakat (giving a portion of wealth to those in need), Sawm (fasting during the holy month of Ramadan), and Hajj (a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca at least once in a lifetime). Muslims worship at mosques, which often feature distinctive domed roofs and tall towers called minarets.
