Learn to read analogue and digital clocks and solve problems involving time.
Being able to tell the time is an essential life skill. On an analogue clock, the short hand points to the hour and the long hand points to the minutes. Because the minute hand travels all the way around the clock in 60 minutes, we count minutes in fives (each number on the clock face represents 5 minutes). We read times as ‘past’ when the minute hand is on the right half of the clock and ‘to’ when it’s on the left โ so 7:45 is ‘quarter to eight’. In everyday life we mostly use a 12-hour clock (with am and pm to distinguish morning and afternoon), but transport timetables and digital displays often use the 24-hour clock โ where 1pm becomes 13:00, 3:30pm becomes 15:30, and midnight is 00:00. Solving time problems means converting between hours and minutes and calculating how long something lasts.
