โญ Key Facts

1 Multiplying by 3 means adding a number to itself three times (e.g. 4 ร— 3 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12).
2 All multiples of 4 are even numbers.
3 The 3 times table and 4 times table share the product 12 (3 ร— 4 = 4 ร— 3 = 12).

Master the 3 and 4 times tables with tips and tricks.

The 3 and 4 times tables are two of the most important multiplication tables you’ll learn in Key Stage 2. Multiplying by 3 means adding a number to itself three times โ€” so 5 ร— 3 means 5 + 5 + 5 = 15. A great trick for the 3 times table: add the digits of any multiple of 3 together and the answer will also be a multiple of 3 (e.g. 27: 2 + 7 = 9). The 4 times table is like doubling the 2 times table โ€” just multiply by 2 twice! All multiples of 4 are even. Knowing your times tables off by heart helps with division, fractions, and so much more. Practise them in order, then try jumping around โ€” real fluency means knowing 7 ร— 4 as quickly as 2 ร— 4!
